Summary
The diploma thesis has defined the thematic fields of middle-sized town and processed its content. The best cartographic methods for visualisation of those themes have been assessed and found.
Methods used for the creation of this thesis contained literature studies and interview, GIS methods and thematic cartography methods.
A chapter called The Creation of Town Maps is about the forms of town maps that dominate nowadays, about the most often processed themes and about companies that contribute to their creation.. There is also afford to describe the differences in the their creation in time.
A chapter of The Introduction to Assessment describes 11 cartographic methods involved in the assessment. Then it contains a list of themes (maps) that were assessed. In sum there were 109 themes divided to 3 sections: Natural Environment (35), Social Environment (35) and Economic Environment (49). There is detailed description of 3 crriterion of assessment: the criterion of phenomenon characteristics, software processing demandingness of the method and readibility for officials.
The longest chapter is own methods assessment for each theme (map). Each theme/map has its own „card of the theme“ which contains space for theme content description and for comment (to the content of the map or to the evaluation results) beside the own assessment. The recommended method is highlighted in each card after the final evaluation. Additionaly there can be, but does not have to be, highligted the method for consideration.
The results are summarized in a final table containing the recommended methods and the methods for consideration for given themes/maps. The next output is methods assessment by the criterions. There can be found which method is the most often marked as the recommended method, what method can not be realized in ArcGIS programme and what methods have better readibility.
As a part of this work there is also a set of thematic maps created by the recommended methods. The results of this work could be useful for the towns (mainly middle-sized) planning to create their own atlases. They could find here the themes to put in the atlas and the right methods for visualisation.
