Bachelor thesis summary

The bachelor thesis drew inspiration from the methodology of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission. The work contained a comprehensive practical part, which consisted of processing (1) data on the frequency of public transport and location of stops, (2) data on the road network, needed for network analysis, and (3) data on the distribution of population. The main goal was the classification of municipalities in the Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc Regions by the already mentioned methodology, which had to be adapted to specific local conditions.

The main result of the work was the creation of classification of mostly rural municipalities within the Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc Regions in terms of the availability of public intercity bus transport. Within this classification, 7 types of municipalities were defined. These types were defined based on a comparison of the share of the population in individual service frequencies. The operating frequency was defined in the work as the average number of departures of buses per hour (low, medium, high, very high, or out of range). The individual types were so different that they could be aptly named, based on the dominant frequency in the given type. The work also enabled the subsequent ranking of municipalities within the type from best to worst. In addition to spatial contexts, statistical contexts were also examined. These included, for example, the dominant size of the municipality within the type, the number of municipalities in the given type, or the median size of the municipality. The primary goal of the work can be considered fulfilled.

The availability of transport was also examined in terms of the time availability of stops from address points. Here, the parameter was a 5-minute walking distance at a speed of 5 km / h (417 m) to the stops. Based on this parameter, service zones around stops were calculated, which were then combined with address points. The resulting indicator within the municipalities was the number of inhabitants without a stop within 5 minutes per 100 inhabitants of the municipality. This relative indicator made it possible to compare municipalities within the area of interest. It was possible to state that the municipalities in the area of interest of the Olomouc Region had better time availability to stops than the municipalities of the Moravian-Silesian Region by 9%.
