Summary

The aim of this thesis is to modify the existing CartoEvaluation method for evaluation of cartographic functionality in mobile GIS products. Main part of thesis was divided into several steps: to modify the CartoEvaluation method to the CartoEvaluationM method, to evaluate mobile GIS products according to new method and finally to compare results for all of evaluated products.

The CartoEvaluationM method is a new approach to the evaluation functionality in mobile GIS products which is based on the Goal-Question-Metric method. In general the method is based on definition of questions, weights and scores.

The CartoEvaluationM method consists of five main goals. First four main goals evaluate the cartographic functionality – Map construction (sheet A), Map symbols (sheet B), Cartographic expression methods (sheet C) and Map syntax (sheet D). Last goal (sheet E) evaluates non-cartographic functionality – Formats, GPS and other additional functions.

In total nine mobile GIS products was evaluated - two commercial products, four Open Source softwares and three „free applications“, which are free but they require user account in ArcGIS Online for work with them. Evaluated products are ArcPad a TopoL Mobile, QGIS for Android, Enebro, gvSIG Mobile and three viewers gvSIG Mini, GeoMobile for ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS for Android.

Finally results of CartoEvaluationM method are represented in tables. Tables display final scores in each of main goals and total score. Also it is possible to compare scores for each main goal (for example in main goal Map symbols).

Software QGIS for Android achieved the highest total score (82.50) from all evaluated products. Other all viewers achieved the lowest total score from all evaluated products.

All of the main aims of thesis were absolutely accomplished. Results of evaluation of the identified cartographic functionality can help a user in the choice of mobile GIS application where a user require a higher cartographic functionality.

Evaluation tables are available in Czech versions in the supplement of this thesis and evaluated tables for each program are available from CD added to thesis.
